What is Cloud Computing?

Understanding what cloud computing is will help you make an informed decision about whether or not using cloud computing is in your best interests. At EC Managed IT, we want to help you make best IT-related decisions for your business needs. That is why we offer a wide range of IT services, including cloud computing.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing encompasses everything that involves delivering computing services over the Internet, including analytics, databases, intelligence, networking, software, and storage. Using Internet-based services allows for more flexible resources, faster innovation, and greater scalability. In most cases, businesses only have to pay for the cloud services they use, which can help lower operating costs, increase the business’ efficiency, and allow the business to scale back services as needed.

Types of Cloud Services

Cloud computing is made up of three different cloud computing models:

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) refers to the main parts of computing that can be rented—servers (physical or virtual), storage, and networking. While this cloud service is a great option for businesses that want to build their own applications or want to have control over almost all of the elements, proper use of IaaS does require a business to have the right set of technical skills in order to use this service at the required level.

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provides businesses with the underlying storage, networking, and virtual servers they need to operate, along with the tools and software needed to build applications, such as middleware, database management, operating systems, and development tools. This type of cloud service is designed to make it easier for developers to create web or mobile apps without having to deal with setting up or managing the servers, storage, network, and databases.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), the most common type of cloud computing used today, provides applications as a service through an on demand or subscription basis. With this type of cloud service, cloud providers host and manage the software and underlying infrastructure, as well as handle any maintenance like software upgrades and security patching. Users will be able to access the service through a web browser or app on their phone, tablet, or computer.
